How to Keep Your Artificial Plants Looking Fresh

As an interior designer at Tropic Casa, I often get asked about the best ways to clean artificial plants—especially when they have real wood trunks but synthetic leaves. While silk and artificial plants are a lifesaver for those of us who tend to "forget" to water (yes, I’ve even managed to lose a lucky bamboo—an almost indestructible plant), there’s one common issue many overlook: dust.

Artificial greenery is fantastic for bringing life and color to a space without the maintenance, but they do require some occasional care. I’ve seen too many beautiful arrangements in upscale restaurants and spas completely covered in dust—a detail that can instantly ruin the atmosphere. If dusty bathroom plants supposedly hint at a dirty kitchen, what does a neglected floral arrangement say about a spa’s hygiene?

But don’t worry! Cleaning your artificial plants isn’t as difficult or time-consuming as it sounds. A simple quarterly dusting will keep them looking vibrant and fresh.

How to Clean an Artificial Plant

  1. Take It Outside
Dust tends to resettle, so it’s best to clean your plant outdoors. Let the breeze carry away any loose dust rather than having to vacuum it up later.

  2. Use a Soft Brush or Damp Cloth
A clean, soft-bristle paintbrush works wonders for dusting flowers. Start at the top and work your way down to avoid spreading dust onto freshly cleaned areas. This method takes just a few minutes and is the most effective way to reach small crevices. A damp cloth is also recommended however with only water as this is easier to easy to use on big leaves

  3. Avoid Damp Cloths for Silk Flowers
Some recommend wiping flowers down with a damp cloth, but I’d advise against it. Moisture can alter the shape of the flower petals,

  4. Do NOT Use Cleaning Solution On Any Silk Plants cleaning solutions may cause the color to fade or bleed. Artificial plants are crafted to look lifelike, so let’s keep them that way!

  5. Alternative Methods

      • The Salt Bag Trick: Some people swear by placing artificial flowers in a bag with table salt and shaking it to dislodge dust. While I haven’t tried this myself, it may work well for small, delicate arrangements.
      • Dishwasher Cleaning: I once tested placing silk flowers on the top rack of my dishwasher (no detergent), and while they came out spotless, the color bled onto the machine’s lining—not ideal. So, I’d stick with manual dusting!

With just a little maintenance, your artificial plants will stay as beautiful as the day you bought them—no watering required.
